Classes at Room to Learn

FREE MOTION QUILTING
  
  
No more hesitating!  Using your home sewing machine, learn the basics of free motion quilting.  Three sessions.  First session:  Getting used to the machine – speed and control.  Working on meandering, stippling, loops, crystals, feathers. Second session uses patterns that you mark on the quilt top.  Discussion on how to make your quilt top.  Third session – work on an actual project, orphan block, etc.  Discussion will be how each piece could be quilted.  How to decide on quilting motifs.

Mystery Quilts
  
                MYSTERY QUILTS -    
  
The mystery quilts have become popular due to the fact that you complete/almost complete a lap size quilt top.  There are now 2 types of mystery quilts offered – traditionally pieced or modern/contemporary design.  Cost is $75 (includes pattern and lunch on Saturday)
Modern/Contemporary – Saturday, Sunday – October 28, 29
Traditional Mystery – March 15, 16, 17, 2018

  JELLY ROLL, NO SURPRISE
  
   
– Instead of a surprise, this time you will know what the pattern is.  It involves courthouse step blocks – with a secondary pattern emerging.  Important to get color values correct in order for pattern to emerge.  There will be pre-cutting for the background.   Requires 2 identical jelly rolls.  The top will be 74 ½” x 74 ½”.    January 19 – 20 – Friday and Saturday  Cost - $45
  
  
  
Back by popular demand!  Want to explore color and design?  What’s missing from your stash?  How do you put together blues?  How many shades of red are there?  What is a real neutral?  Here’s an opportunity to stretch, learn, even keep a journal.  Lots of design tips to inspire both traditional and art quilters.  How?  Monthly sessions using as a guide, the book Color & Design by Heather Thomas.
Did you miss the first few sessions?  No problem, each session is a separate workshop – not dependent on the previous session.

Color & Design Workshop

​                     TRUNK SHOW
Tuesday and Wednesday, August 29- 30, 2017
10am – 8pm
There will be a trunk show of quilts made from the Jelly Roll Surprise classes. Come see the different
interpretations of the pattern by the use of the colors and fabric designs in the different jelly rolls that were
used. Meet the quilters who made them. Enjoy a treat to show appreciation for your supporting the efforts
of Room To Learn to bring something inspiring and different to you. The pattern for the quilts on display
will be for sale for those interested in making their own Jelly Roll Surprise.

FABRIC DYEING –
  
On Saturday afternoon, we will set up our ice dye and come back Sunday afternoon to see the results.  You will need one bin approx 17” x 21” with lid.  Wear old clothes!
Cost $75  (Included are 12 fat quarters of prepared for dyeing fabric, dyes, chemicals, ice, and misc. supplies)

NEW QUARTERLY MEETING
TUESDAY’S TOPIC, TIP, TECHNIQUE, TOOL & TREAT
Dates: October 17, 2017
Time:  6:30-8:30pm
October Topic – What Is the Value of My Fabric?  Color Value, That is!
This will be discussion of light, medium and dark values, plus those values in-between.  What does this mean when choosing a quilt pattern?  When choosing fabrics for a pattern?  Bring 3 fabrics that you consider light, medium and dark.  Bring a fabric that you don’t know how to use.  There will be a hands-on exercise with everyone participating!  You might want to take notes!
 
There will be a tip, technique or tool presented.
There will be a “treat” – along with coffee, bottled water or soda.
